We recently started using an in home audiotory rehabilitation program called LACE in our offices. It is a software program that patients use daily in their home to help them to increase their understanding of speech in difficult environments.
We all know that hearing aids today are very good, yet there are limits to what we can do. The LACE program allows us to strengthen the patient's ability to understand speech, especially in complex/noisy environments.
For our forum users, I would highly recommend this program, especially if you feel that you would like to be able to hear and understand better.
You can even choose to share the results via automated email to your audi/dispenser to see what difference the program has made for you.
For some of our forum users, this program may be a much less costly way to improve speech understanding versus replacing recently purchased hearing aids.
You can also find more info on the product at www.neurotone.com (http://store.localbattery.com/stmeup2emvej.html).

I've just bought this. There was a $100 discount. I'm looking forward to trying it out.
I am a bit concerned at Xbulder's comment on the consequences of stopping using it. It seems one could end up worse...? I might have to do some research on this.

Seems to me like some sort of sound training method like Berard's method, AIT.... but do you have to be an audiologist to order it? or is it ideal for self-therapy?

You can order the software directly from Neurotone ( http://www.neurotonestore.com/p-software.html ), or if you get it through your audiologist they can help you with the program and the results.
It is a very easy program, quite user-friendly. I have not heard about scores dropping after you discontinue use, but can ask about that at the AAA convention in April.
They do have a demo you can download ( http://www.neurotone.com/lace-demo-download.html ) so you can see what the program does.

xbulder said in part..
I have heard after stop using it there is a slight decline...
My question is: "At which point does the decline start? Is it at the positive peak of the training, or at your original level?"
As a example.. if your starting point is 30 at the beginning of the training.. and you gain a additional 20 at the peak of the course, you're now at 50. If you do have a decline of lets say 10, does the decline start at the 50 and move to 40.. or does the decline start from your original 30 and move to 20?
If it declines from 50 to 40, then you still have a positive increase of 10.. but if it decline starts at 30 then you've actually ended up with a decrease of 30 because it was 50 at its peak, but now at 20.. a difference of 30.
I hope y'all can decipher what I'm trying to get at.

Hi,
I have been using the LACE program for 13 sessions so far.
Costco is thinking of carrying this program and I am one of the folks that they are testing it on.
I am scheduled to see my audiologist today.
It seems to be helping, but i could do without the "testimonials",
It seems that on them and any other hearing aid literature, the exclusively use people 130 years old or older. I am still struggling with the fact that i need these at a relatively young age.
Anyone else using the program?
thanks

From using the program, I cannot imagine the decline could possibly go lower than the original level. It is mainly listening techniques.

Anybody here has positive results with this?
I am one week with my hearing aids, and feel that speech understanding will not improve.
I don't know what can help.

I am also interested in hearing from someone who has used the Lace program.
I am always open to any possible help that I can get to improve my hearing and listening skills. I couldnt find a "demo" to see how the program works, also I assume that the accent will be american?
I am wondering how this will impact on a person who normally dont talk to people with that particular accent eg some words would be harder to understand for me because I am use to listen to a NZ accent.

I was born and raised in the U.K but I have lived in the U.S. for twenty years. I also trained as a simultaneous translation conference interpreter which entailed studies in linguistics. I was able to pick up regional dialects in foreign languages and speak them with fluency, even when native speakers could not understand a word of the regional dialect. For example, many Germans have almost no comprehension of Bavarian dialect, but I spoke it with fluency and without trace of foreign accent. I am just beginning to be aware of how lazy my brain has become since my sharp and sudden decline in hearing ability 23 years ago and I will be starting using the LACE program this coming week. Occasionally I will watch BBC America and while I have no problems with most American accents, I cannot understand a word of British accents, even when straining hard to focus. I used to be able to mimic many different versions of English including Australian, New Zealand, South African and regional British accents. I am wondering if my brain has 'unlearned' it's native speech environment? It will be interesting to see what LACE does for this situation.

I get 1.6 million hits using
LACE Auditory Rehabilitation
but 24K using
"Auditory Rehabilitation"
This latter search may put this subject in context. I guess an Amazon search is in my future. :)
Best case: the benefits are permanent without continuing lessons.
Worst case: some problem is caused by this method that doesn't show up for months or years, but I can't imagine by what mechanism this would happen.
If it does work, how much is the public willing to spend each month or year to get an X dB improvement?
I suppose one outcome could be that it works perfectly but not enough of the public wants it for them to continue the program.
So far these posts amount to anecdotal evidence but at some point, with enough posts, these results may carry some weight.
BTW, there a 'bots that cruise the Web looking for valid e-mail addresses so I advise against posting them. There was also once a guy who posted his latitude/longitude to such precision that everyone knew where his house was, within +/- 300' or so. :(
