Does anyone use the Dry and Store Hearing Aid Dehumidifier (http://www.localbattery.com/drystoreglobal.html)?
Many of our customers have really liked this product, as it removes moisture, odors and bacteria from hearing aids. They do require the Dry Brik II Dessican Bricks. (http://www.localbattery.com/dryandstdebr1.html)
Here is a link: www.localbattery.com (http://localbattery.com/drystoreglobal.html)
I think this is something that can help. Please share your ideas.

I purchased a dry & store dehumidifier and it works great for me. It's been about 8 months since I started using it and I haven't had any problems with my aids since. Usually I'll be going in to see the hearing aid guy about every other month with a problem usually related to moisture. He convinced me to get the dehumidifier because it's common around where I live in the south to get moisture build up in my aids. Now it's been so far so good!
I recommend that my patients also use the Dry and Store, especially the Global model that retails for around $99.
They work well in removing moisture and also killing bacteria using the included UV lamp.

I'm brand new to HA and my audio has not mentioned anything about moisture except don't get them wet. Is humidity and or body moisture a big problem? I put my HA in the sealed box that came with them (ie rubber gasket). Reading here it seems I must do more. Any and all help appreciated.

I've had one for the last 5 and a half years, and usually used it every night until last month, when I got GN Resound Pulse aids with rechargeable batteries and a charger. Now my aids sit in the charger every night.
I do like that the new Dry-Brik II lasts 2 months. The net cost of using one now is less than it was 5 years ago!

I'm going to look into some cheapy sealed box into which I could store the aids and some sort of desicxant block, should be buyable in bulk. Our Summers are very humid.
Spending $100 on a plastic box seems counter to my cheapskatedness.:p

When I got my HAs my audiologist suggested I use dry white rice for storage and dehumidification. When she said that I recalled that the addition of rice to salt prevents caking in humid conditions so why not give it a try.
I put about a 1/2 cup of white rice in the bottom of a small disposible food storage container (i.e Gladware) and topped it with a 4X4 gauze pad. I simply remove my HAs, open the battery door to turn them off, lay them on the gauze pad and close the container. So far so good.
Just to be sure this was indeed okay, I checked it out on line and found many sites recommending this as an alternative, such as:
http://www.listen-up.org/haid/moisture.htm
Now THAT's cheap...

Had a follow-up visit today to adjust my new HA's. While there I asked if she recommended any particular methods for drying and she just gave me a small canister with a Silica Gel "cube" that you microwave. It looks like a large film canister and there's a sponge that goes over the Silica cube. It's called a "Hearing Aid Saver" by Westone Laboratories, Inc. Hope it works! She said it should last years. I did a quick search online they look like their only about $20. If you're a cheapskate like me this may be a good option. :o

I just store my Hearsource hearing aids in a small case they gave to me. I think it has a moisture absorbing component to it. I think replacement is only a few bucks. Is the Dry & Store really worth the extra $.

It depends on where you live. If you are in a humid state such as Florida, I think the better dehumidifiers are worth the money, but if you are in a drier state you will probably do just fine with the less expensive ones. Also, if you tend to perspire alot you may want to think about upgrading to one of the more advanced dehumidifiers that can dry out the aid more thoroughly than the dessicant jars.

This reminds me of the comment my Mom made to me when I was griping about the cost of framing my diploma. She said that we'd just spent xx thousands to get the thing, I could spend $42 to get it framed.
I've spent a lot of money on my aids, another $150 for a Dry and Store is a no-brainer.:p

I received my D&S Global two days ago. One of my BTE's was becoming a little soft. One 8 hour session in the D&S has brought the volume back up to a more than acceptable level. Has saved a trip back to the repair shop which means it has paid for itself already.
Re: the comment on rice by PugDaddy. Unless you dry the rice in the oven to remove the moisture, I doubt that it is doing much for your HAs.
I have used the "dessicant" container system for years and unless you regularly recharge (bake/microwave) the beads they are not that affective. The only times it worked well was when placing the HA in the sealed container while the beads were still quite warm after recharging.

From my perspective, given that hearing aids have a lot of small crevices/tubes etc, the Dry & Store is good in that it introduces air movement and a modest amount of warming - very useful.

My Audi gave me a mini HAL-HEN Mini Dri-Aid. She said this would do fine unless I am getting alot of moisture - sweat, rain etc. It has crystals in a container in the bottom, she said to watch and if it turns pink (several months maybe), then you have to put it in the oven for approx. 30 minutes. It does well.

The Dry and Store (around $100) cannot be compared to any other HA drying system. It is unique in that it has a UV light which destroys surface bacteria and it moves warmed air around and through the HAs.
Spending $20 on a dessicant kit is waste of money! Invest the extra dollars and get a real drying aid that will pay for itself in a short time.
I bought mine from Admin on eBay and I reckon it is the best investment I have made to prolong the life of my Siemens Nitros and my Bernafon Flair BTEs.
It is a sturdy unit too! Having fallen from my two feet high bedside table a couple of times it still works and dries!
Every HA user who wishes to prolong the life their HAs should own a Dry and Store.
PLUS - there is nothing nicer than placing a nicely warmed HA into your ear after a cold Melbourne night!
Worth much, much more than the retail price because of the benefits it offers HA users. I really wish that I had a D&S when I bought my first Phonak HAs back in 2001. I reckon they would still be alive today!
Besides my HAs, the D&S is the best investment I have made for my hearing!
I love my Dry and Store!
You will too, as soon as you buy one!

WHOA.......never said that this was superior in any way. I just stated that it worked to get them dry...I agree it has alot of other benefits. I will most likely purchase one - but this works during my trial period.

The Dry and Stores work very well. My favorite is the Dry and Store Global (http://www.localbattery.com/drystoreglobal.html), as it is compact and also incorporates the UV lamp, to kill bacteria/fungi. The unit does a great job removing moisture and odors also and is large enough for BTE's and Cochlear Implants.
Bear in mind that the dessicant bricks inside, which remove the moisture need to be changed every 1-2 months. The new Dry and Store Dry Brik II (http://www.localbattery.com/dryandstdebr1.html) is a great improvement over the original and lasts about 2 months for most users, unless you live in a very humid climate.
There is also the new Dry and Store Zepyr Hearing Aid Dehumidifer (http://www.localbattery.com/drystzefsh.html), which is smaller and good for people who travel a lot or who don't need the UV lamp and just need the drying capabilities.

I had the Global model which I find easy to use, but the finish outside of the box was not durable. It rubbed off and scratched easily like it was sprayed painted on. It was a mess being in my luggage or bag. Otherwise, it was working fine for years until the power adapter broke. Could not find another power adapter as it was something special.
The professional model has the better finish, but the check drawer light was a pain to get to turn off, even though the drawer was closed! Looking into my second unit soon. I read that the brik was not positioned right, but it should have been better designed in this case for almost twice the price. The global model had no problem in this regard as it doesn't rely on the sensor like the professional model does.
Otherwise, both clean the aids up and the aids require less repairs.

I'm using Dry and Store Global since 2007 and I'm a very happy user. Due to the fact I'm a very active person, I always looked for a better drying for my hearing aids and thanks to the internet, I found Dry & Store Global (http://dryandstore.com/index.cgi?CONTEXT=art&cat=15&art=48)and a wonderful store where I purchase regularly hearing aid batteries and dry bricks, Localbattery (http://www.localbattery.com). :)
After the 8 hour cycle with the dry brick and UV lamp, the moulds are perfectly dried out and sanitized. There are no more itches in the ear, no infections, but a perfect sound every time!

I wanted to pass on a good story about the Dry & Store Professional.
One of my dad's old friend's who is 82 years old has worn hearing aids for 40+ years. He complains about itching all the time. He bought a Dry & Store and his itching has completely stopped. He is very happy.
Take care.

The rice concept sounds perfect.
I receiced a screw lid container when I received my Siemans aids
Audi told me to watch the color of the metia in a little bag....
When change color...po them in the microwave to drive off the moisture then put the desicant bag
back in the plastic screw top container and good to go for another few months
All at no charge...she just gave it to me when I asked.

As long as we're on the subject of hearing aid dryers, how good is the Audio Dry, which costs only $35, considerably less than the Dry and Store? The problem with the Dry and Store is that you have to buy those dessicant bricks every few months, which can become an expensive hassle over time. Are there any studies that demonstrate that the Dry and Store is superior to other hearing aid dryers? GeraldYou get what you pay for, as they say. :p

The Dry & Store's come up on eBay often. With patience you can get a very nice one for under $50 US. The desiccant bricks are also sold on eBay for about $16 US for 6 bricks, 1 years worth. Pending on your situation this is not a lot of money for the best dryer/sanitizer available.
Good luck

I have the Dry and Store some months now. Now I have the following problem. Every night I put my instruments inside the Dry and Store and as I know the procedure lasts eight [8] hours. For some reason after 1-3 hours the dry and store turned off. Do you know anyone why this happen ?

White rice works ok, particularly if it is all you have on hand. However, I found that specially designed desiccants are better. They dry out moisture at about twice the rate of white rice (in a passive container).
More details of my own funny little investigation can be viewed here. (http://www.australiahears.com.au/Blog/entryid/16/how-to-dry-hearing-aids-and-other-electronics.aspx)

Perhaps I have just been a very lucky person. However, when I got my HAs (Siemens analogs) 15 years ago, I elected to use tiny desiccant bags from small electronics shipments placed in a small food storage container. This lasted less than a year I guess and since then, the aids have been laid on the nearest horizontal surface overnight. No infections, no electronics failures, no nothin'. I don't suppose I'll be so lucky with my new digital instruments, but I hope so.
