Nasal and throat congestion

Does anyone experience congestion in nose and throat and hoarseness while using digital hearing aids? If so, I'd like to know what can be done to eliminate this nuisance.

What kind of HAs are you wearing? They could be plugging up your ear canals, but that doesn't explain the hoarseness. One of the resident Audis here might be able to explain that and what to do about it.

It appears that only I hear myself talking hoarse. Others say they don't hear me any different. But the feeling of congestion is real.

You might need a more open fit style of hearing aid, that should help with the congested feeling. As for the hoarseness, maybe you're hearing your own voice differently due to the congestion. It others are telling you that you don't sound any different, then I would just concentrate on getting rid of the congestion.

My family and I don't know what to do. The digital hearing aids cause almost total head congestion so that the aids aren't being worn. The audiologist and the ENT doctor have never heard of this side effect. Decongestants didn't work, nasal sprays didn't work. So got outside-the-ear aids and the head congestion is still there. We are desperate! Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Let us see a copy of your audiogram and tell us what kind of vent you have and we can probably tell you what the problem is. If it is what I think it is I am very worried about an ENT that probably doesn't know anything about occlusion and probably his just out of school audiologist isn't much smarter. All of us out here would like to know how this plays out.

Are you allergic to the plastic? Maybe a trip to a allergy specialist might do the trick?

Is it nasal congestion, so that you can't move air through the nose? Or, is it a "feeling" of being stopped up? It may be the occlusion feeling.

If you really can't move air through the nose but as soon as you take them out (after an hour or two) you can move air through the nose then maybe it's an allergy?

I just got Phonak Cassias BTE with earmold...I tend to have seasonal allergies but the first evening I had them (I only wore them a couple of hours), I had stuffy nose, congestion and drainage that night...took my nasal spray and honey and it was ok...I am keeping track and will tell my Audi who is affiliated with my ENT...not sure of the opening he left...first it was with a 3mm (?) then he made it smaller... I can't really say it is from the aid because I do suffer with this but I had been fine for a couple of months until the night after I wore my new aids...rosie

Could be the occlusion effect of the aid. It can feel/sound different to everyone and it's hard to describe.

It could also be that your aids are creating a bit of inflammation, I'm sure that you've checked the fit.

Hi Martha

Try this - put one of the aids in your ear and see if the problem occures. If yes, pull the aid out slightly untill the problem goes. Do the same with the other ear. If partly removing the aid or aids solves the problem, the ear molds which go into your ears need to have a larger vent hole in them.
