ok, being new to all of this, i had no idea there were so many accessories available for the maintenance of hearing aids....everything from dehumidifiers to little vacuum cleaners to sanitizers and mini brushes, picks wands and various other doo dads.

so, what are the 'must haves'? and what are the 'not necessary, but nice to haves'?

The mini brushes and picks come with your hearing aids and are used to remove wax. Other than that, I vote for the Dry & Store as a must. There is a post on this forum about it: http://www.hearingaidforums.com/showthread.php?t=3050 I would go for the Global unless you do a lot of travelling and would prefer the smaller (still big) Zephyr. They say:

"The Zephyr does not include the germicidal cycle that its larger siblings share,
but it does have the same renowned drying and deodorizing benefit".

The Global & larger Professional:
"Reduce repairs and enjoy better sound quality from your hearing aids - it's easy, with Dry & Store.

Two fully-featured models, the Professional and Global, offer unparalleled drying and sanitizing of all types of hearing aids, cochlear implant hardware, and other hearing instruments such as ear monitors and noise maskers.
Dry & Store® is a conditioning system for all types of hearing instruments - traditional hearing aids as well as cochlear implant equipment, noise maskers, ear monitors, and more. Best results are achieved with in-home use every night. While you sleep, it removes moisture, dries earwax, kills germs, and deodorizes your hearing instruments.
# For most users, results include: Fewer repairs
# Better sound quality
# Relief from itchy ears
# Longer battery life
# Fresh and clean hearing aids
If you have ever experienced fuzzy or distorted sound, weakness, static, intermittency, short battery life, or even all-out failure of your hearing aids, and you've confirmed that the batteries are good, there's a good chance that the culprit is either moisture or earwax. In fact, manufacturers report that as many as one-half of the aids they receive for repair are malfunctioning due to moisture or earwax. Thanks to Dry & Store, you can save yourself the time, expense, and aggravation of those preventable repairs.

I agree. The Dry & Store is a must have. That's about the only accessory that I have needed in the past 5 months.
