Since money is an issue for me, would it be silly to purchase one aid only, with the intent of making it a situational use device?

One is better than none.
Two cheaper hearing aids are better than one expensive aid.
Open fit would be good for your loss. The RIC style may be a little more expensive, so you may want to look at the stndard open fit.
Don't buy technology you will never use, multi memories,remotes, bluetooth etc. Good for some users, but often not needed.

Right, one is better than none. Expect some localization issues, but i have many patients who can only afford one and have been pleased. And you can always purchase another one down the road, given you are pleased with the first.
