View Full Version : How do you interpret the "numbers"?

I just started posting my numbers as part of my sig, but don't really know what they mean. I see other people's numbers that look a LOT better than mine and I don't consider myself "bad". Ican use any phone w.o. a problem. I do have some trouble picking up everything on a TV program (except the news). I do miss some conversation.
So, at what point do the numbers tell an "expert" you are ready for an HA?

Hi miket, for that loss (moderate to severe) you will defo require hearing aids, your quality of life will improve greatly and you will become less tired or stressed out trying to hear!

I have a severe/profound loss,, but I can only hear in the one ear unaided on the phone and do so pretty well! I sometimes remove my aid for the phone, especially on a cell phone if I'm not connected via bluetooth. The Phonak iCom & TVLink are brilliant and I can follow anything on TV, before I got them I struggled badly, but not now!

Good luck, Cheers Kev:D

Thanks for the response. I didn't know my readings were "moderate to severe" since I function perfectly (or almost) in the business world and only have some problems in other situations. Question, how easy is it to quickly remove your HA for the phone?
My ideal situaion/solution would be that I could still wear my regular BT headset with an HA. It would seem in readings here, that's not possible. With a regular BT headset you never have to touch the phone. You can answer by touching the BT and call out by touching the BT and using the voice dial function on my BBerry.

Hi Mike, yeah you will be borderline on the severe! Suffice to say you will struggle badly at meetings, restraunts or anywhere there is a lot of background noise! I make a lot of phone calls in the office and they are voip phones, I get by with my HA's in! In the car I have a Parrot mki9200 hands free kit, which is hard wired to my stereo system, the voice quality is excellent/brilliant with my HA's:D links below! First link shows you an in depth of what the parrot is all about! You can hook up an MP3, charge your phone, tis an excellent bit of kit!

If I am in a clients and I get a call, I will answer and just say excuse me a second, weak out my aid and say sorry about that and carry on the convo, takes a couple of seconds with practice!

Lastly, there are many brilliant HA's out there, Phonak or Oticon are most probs the best, maybe one of the Audi's on here would make a recomendation of a certain HA? Phonak has on some of their aids a program called "DuoPhone" explained in last link! There is also Click'n Talk, but this only works with sony ericsson cell phones!

Good luck, Cheers Kev:D

Didn't know I would be considered close to "severe" since I function fully 100% on phone, 95% watching TV news and sports, Maybe 50 to 60% on TV programs in general, 80 -90% in one on one convrsation, and maybe 50-70% in group conversation.

I have moderate loss in one ear. That translates to turing the TV up a bit louder if I am the only one home, or my having to ask my wife "What?" all the time when I miss some of the words when she talks to me. If I give my brain a few seconds I can piece together what she said, but that is by filling in the blanks. At meetings I might miss a word here and there. At very noisy events like my buddy's bachelor party the guys had to scream at me in the bar for me to understand, and even then I was again piecing together what they said from the parts I did hear.

It is amazing how much you can compensate for a loss and not realize you have one. Since the loss happened over time you just made adjustments so it did not seem unusual to you. Once you get everything right you will be amazed at how much you were missing. My best example of that is actually my eyesight. Way back in high school I thought my vision was normal. One day a friend called to me from across the gym, and I realized that I could not tell who he was. So I had my vision checked, and yes I needed glasses. The difference was amazing, all the things I was missing with the assumption that everyone saw exactly that way proved to me that the human mind will compensate and deal with any adversity the best it can.

Good luck with your search for exactly the right fit in gear and setup for your situation.

You probably describe my situation quite accurately. I got "fitted" yesterday for a Phonak S V BTE open fit and pick them up in 3 weeks. Audi dealt w. my apprehension excellently. I'll report back in a few weeks after wearing them for a while.

Hi Mike, I found a site that tells you how to get your average loss and yours is 56 db.

I hope this helps, Cheers Kev:D

Mike
500-- 1000-- 1500-- 2000-- 3000-- 4000-- 8000
25---- 30---- 45----- 55---- 60---- 85---- 95 = 56 average db loss.

The loss is mainly moderate, but becomes HF severe.

Without knowing your job, lifestyle, your hearing aid preferences, the shape of your canals, other contra-indications and what you want to spend that's an incredibly difficult question to answer.

Hi Phantom, tis not for me to recommend hearing aids, that advice must come from a qualified audiologist or dispenser! As Um bongo is one of the qualified experts on this site, then he speaks with a wealth of knowledge and expertise, if you give him a little more info, then I'm sure he would be more than happy to recommend several HA's to meet your needs:D

I hope this helps, good luck, cheers Kev:D

1/11/11 .Hz500.. 1K.. 2K.. 3K.. 4K.. 6K.. 8K
L. Ear .......40 .....50.. 45.. 55.. 45.. 65.. 75= 53 average db loss.
R. Ear ......30 ......40.. 40.. 50.. 50.. 65.. 65= 48 average db loss.

According to the chart you have a moderate loss and there are many wonderful HA's out there to make a vast improvement in your quality of life.

Thanks for the responses. Ok, I'm a factory worker where I rotate from control room, (air conditioned/heated and quite) to working in the field (Very hot and loud). My other job, real estate owner and landlord I do a lot of face to face communication with residents, and clientele. I as a child was born with 35% loss in both ears. I wore behind the ear aids until????? 9? 10? I then went until about 10 years ago without HAs. Then I got some CIC aids. After two years of trying to get the aids to stay in gave up. I have pretty straight canals. I've for the last 8 years adapted as it has become more and more difficult as people keep talking lighter and lighter to me. :)

Which brings me to today. I do sweat a lot even when I'm not active. Im into anything tech and love the wireless options I'm hearing about. I'm looking to spend less than 6k for the pair.

Hi Phantom, you'll get state of the art for that kinda cash! A good set of HA's will make a massive improvement to your quality of life and don't forget, this will also help your family/friends whom will appreciate your effort! A good Audiologist is the key....................

Good luck, Cheers Kev:D

Kev... Did you trial the Alera 61's? Where I live there are very few audi's and they are pretty much brand specific. If I want Resound (assuming it's a good fit for me) I have to go to that Audi. Due to my last experience, (Audi didn't give me the support I thought I deserved for what I paid) I won't go back to him which eliminates Siemens. I've pretty much determined I won't pay more than my 6k. If the Audi won't sell me what I want for that, due to lack of competition in area then I'll have some tough decisions. And then there is the quality of the Audi as far as setting up these new aids too. Mostly rambling, but excited to start the process!

Thanks man!

Hi Phantom, yeah a few months back I trialed the Alera 9's, but the Audi did not have a clue what she was doing, but to be fair she was new to the Alera's! I am no Audi but given your loss I think you would do really well with them:D I am trialing the Alera 9's again on Monday, tis a free trial for a month, but this time its a different Audi, whom is convinced he will get them to work for me with some bigger power domes, the Audi seems to know his stuff and seems on the ball and says he has had all his best results via Resound, but I have nothing to lose as he also says he will give me a massive discount, which will be around half of what I would pay normally:D

Cheers Kev.
