Ever been stuck in the rear of a bus, say, at a port of call on a cruise? The guide is too far away for you to attempt any lip-reading, the engine screams under the rear seats with every gear change and, overhead, the air-condioning unit grumbles noisily in the background because the unit for the whole bus always seems to be in the rear.
Remedy: if there are say three busses, ask the tour director to deny you access in sequence to the half-filled bus #1 (if that is what's available as you stand in line), but to hold you until Bus #2 or #3 is ready, and to put you in that one -- near the front. You are not, you say, trying to weasel into the prized front right seat on the bus (that every obsessional passenger on every tour wants) just get into the front.
Works!
