Thread: Can hearing be tested with the aids on?

  1. Default Can hearing be tested with the aids on?

I'm new to hearing aids and the forum. I have ReSound Forza BTE REI aids from Costco, fitted 8/20/12, adjusted 9/4/12, return deadline 11/10/12. I am now at the beginning of week 8, wearing them 6 to 12 hours per day.

With the volume set by the Audiologist, high frequencies continue to be loud and metallic. In conversation my voice is so loud and ringing I find it very distracting. Turning the volume buttons down three or four clicks brings the highs down to a more "normal" level, but brings amplification for 250 to 1000Hz so low those frequencies sound like I'm wearing earplugs.

Can hearing correction with the aids be objectively tested, like running an audiogram with the hearing aids on? Should a test of that type show a fairly flat graph with a good correction?

As discussed in the other thread you started, yes, many audiologists can do such a test; I don't know whether Costco can do it though. You don't retake your hearing test while wearing the aids to do this. Instead as I remember the audiologist uses the ReSound software with a wireless connection (or maybe some additional hardware for some models) to get a graphical representation of what you're hearing through the aids. This can help them confirm or change their settings for the aids. Ask about it at Costco and see what they offer. Good luck.

There was a more commonly used method called free-field testing, which is an audiogram done in a test booth with wall mounted speakers. Thresholds etc are measured with your hearing aids on. Most places don't have this setup any longer. Various other verification methods exist now that can measure sound pressure in the ear canal to verify if you are meeting a target.

My audi has this set up. They've tested me with this.

Your voice is loud? Do you have custom molds or solid soft domes? You could probably use open domes or tulip domes and your voice would not be loud. I use tulip domes and my voice sounds normal.

Once you get an open fit (open domes or tulip domes) you can go back up with the volume and your voice should sound normal.

I can also recommend trying an open fit, I'm using open domes (with a hearing loss very similar to yours) and have never had a problem with my voice sounding loud. I do have some problem with feedback, but that's a small trade off for natural low frequencies.

Not exactly an "objective" test maybe, but my audiologist did speech in noise tests with and without the hearing aids, and that clearly confirmed my feeling that I can follow conversations in (reasonably) noisy environments better with my HAs.

    Thanks for the replies.

I am wearing the smallest open caps, with no dome at all.

My audiologist feels any of the tests wearing the aids are not useful with my hearing loss as they would only show 2 or 3 data points in my significant loss range.

She reprogramed to remove all gain from 250, 500, 1k and 2k, then added about 10db gain to her original curve for 3k and 4k.

This reduced the heavy, metallic echo of my own voice. The racket when I speak is Much thinner and higher now. My clothes no longer sound like sanding plywood when I walk.

I'll try these settings for a week or so before I make another appointment.

Sorry for my semi-double post. The registration page for this forum is down. I have tried it again and again for a few weeks and attempted emails to contact the admin would not transmit. The admin manually registered me the day I first posted. I was trying to get some information before my audiologist appointment at noon yesterday.

At Costco, they *should* have the necessary equipment to test in a soundfield as well as to run Real Ear Measurements (objective). One thing to keep in mind if they do a soundfield test is that they will test you with both ears together, not R vs L...but with the REM they can do them individually to see how the hearing aids are responding at a variety of frequencies and to speech signals.
