Thread: How do you know when your hearing aids are getting old?

  1. Default

The Rexton Insite+ CIC pair I bought from Costco I ordered from Costco on 1/03/2011 had 3 year warranty, and were dispensed on 1/19/2011. Both of them went bad on 1/16/2015, 4 years later, passing the 3 year warranty by the mfg already. Luckily I paid using the Costco AmEx, and the Costco hearing specialist told me that AmEx usually offers an extra year of warranty after the original mfg warranty expires. So I checked with AmEx and they agreed to pay for the repair, which was $270 for both aids (service diagnosis was receiver clogged, had to be replaced, for both aids). It was very lucky that they went bad very shortly before the end of the extra year of warranty by AmEx. I brought them in to Costco to have them sent in for repair on 1/16/2015. I thought it was already past the AmEx extra year of warranty, but fortunately, what counted was the dispensing date of 1/19/2011, not the day I paid for them of 1/03/2011. So going by the dispensing date of 1/19/2011, I turned them in for repair barely 3 days before the AmEx warranty expired.

So my data point to be shared is 4 years of service for my hearing aids. And the receiver didn't actually go bad, the service note said that they were clogged. But they were replaced anyway, not just unclogged.

The other thing I shared that hopefully will help somebody in the future is that even if you're out of mfg warranty, check with your credit card to see if they provide extra benefit of an extra year of warranty or not. Lucky for me I used AmEx and they offered this benefit. And also lucky for me that the Costco specialist deals with this issue often enough to know about this (I certainly wasn't aware of it). And finally luck for me is that my aids went bad just in time barely a few days before the AmEx warranty expired.

I'm having issues with one of my aids and the one year warranty ended in June. It never occurred to me to use my credit card warranty with them. My card does provide an extra year for "all major purchases" so I'm going to follow up with this. Thank you for the tip!

I just ordered a pair of Resound Calas at Costco yesterday. The manager of the HA center pointed out the warranty extension offered by many credit cards. She also mentioned that the Visa card now being offered through Costco adds 2 years to the warranty - bringing it up to 5 years!

I just got my Cala's the other day. Paid for with the new Visa thru Costco. VERY good to know. Wonder if that warranty will cover the accessory items too? (maxi mic and TV streamer?) Thanks.

I can only speak directly to the situation with the Costco MasterCard in Canada, but the arrangement as I understand it is that the credit card company's warranty covers any Costco purchase. It extends the original warranty for up to 3 years, with a maximum warranty coverage of 5 years. So, as it stands in Canada, the Costco warranty for defects and supplies like receivers is 3 years. The MasterCard warranty thus adds two years. The Costco warranty against owner-inflicted damage and loss is 2 years; the MasterCard adds another 3.

Like the others said, sometime it's just the HA's age itself and you start having issues with it. Or may even notice a slight change in your hearing. Or would sometime also notice the difference between your HA and some of the other newer HA's others are wearing and so forth.
