They don't trust that the dispenser has their best interests at heart and only wants to move product.

    Does that shoe fit?

Money. For many it is just the fact that they can't afford them. I know if my insurance had not paid 80% of my hearing aid cost i would not have been able to get them.

It's the stigma of wearing aids and age. Even in England where aids are fully paid for by the NHS, the same percentage of individuals who need but do not wear aids in both the USA and England are nearly identical.

So you're basically saying it's vanity.

For me, the major problem was money. Insurance pays a little, decent aids are very expensive. I ultimately had to finance the difference.

BTW, the number one reason to have the aids is speech understanding. Anything beyond that is icing on the cake. Once I started wearing the aids, I found that vanity wasn't even an issue. I wear BTE aids with RICs. Most people are surprised I use them when they notice or I tell them for some reason..

Most people don't even notice I wear them or they just don't say anything about it. Either way, I don't care. I like being able to hear.

I think its more than just money. I bought a pair ten years ago and wore them very little until recently. I just didn't like the hassle of having to wear them. Now my hearing is progressively getting worse and I have issues hearing customers at work so I've started wearing them again full time as of a month ago.

This might be the wrong forum to ask this question because most of us already have hearing aids, so we have already bought them. Now my parents didn't by them because my father said they cost to much and my mother said hearing aids didn't work and she based this statement on the fact that my grandmother had hearing aids back in the 40's and 50's and could not hear with them.

I would have to agree that 15 to 20 years ago, hearing aids didn't work very well. One older gentleman couldn't hear well with them and the batteries were constantly going dead. A grandmother had a pair that were constantly in feedback squeal. It was so bad we had to put our lab (dog) in the garage because she was trying to jump on the lady trying to figure out what was going on.

Modern aids are MUCH better. In most cases a 30 day trial is free and without obligation. It might be worth her consideration.
