Thread: Using rice

    Default Using rice

My Audi suggested using rice to dry my HA's instead of a desiccant or an expensive drier. I was wondering if anyone has done this.

This is an old good trick if your aids get wet too.

One potential problem with using rice all the time is that rice does have some dust associated with it. I use a desiccant and it works great. Not expensive to buy and some formats are fully rechargeable in a microwave. If you want to go simple (jar with desiccant in it) you can find one for under $15 and with recharging they literally last years. Probably ends up being as cheap or cheaper than rice in the long run.

I have one of the middle of the road driers (Dry and Store Zephyr). Has desiccant packs a year's supply of which costs $12. So far the dryer has lasted me 4+ years.

    Happy desiccating!

Wasn't aware that UV makes the tubes brittle. I have a Serene Renew (replaced a Dry & Store, coz I think it does a better job) drier that uses heat instead of desiccant and has UV diodes which I've been using. I have Linx2 RIC aids with ear molds, so, should I cease using the UV (assume it also makes the ear molds hard)?

Rice is a very mild desiccant at best, nearly useless in real life. Real desiccant is cheap, and can be reused, so the cost is negligible.

I use the Zephyr while at home, use the little jar thing when away from home. Works fine for me.

As far as I know, the Dry and Store uses UV-C....which is not as hard on plastics as UV-B as it doesn't penetrate the surface. That's the science...but I have no real experience. I think the UV is ENTIRELY unnecessary. If you don't want the UV, no need to replace the Dry and Store...just take the bulb out.

Taking a moment to wipe your HA's with a clean, slightly damp cloth (perhaps with a small amount of very mild soap) is more than enough to remove anything your ear is going to transfer to your HA's. Unless you are dropping your ITE in a bacterial culture, I see no reason for UV disinfection (AKA: IT'S a FAD).

I have the Zephyr and it works great...and is significantly cheaper than any of the UV models.

I've been doing this for years and it works great. I keep a Tupperware container full of rice in my bathroom, and every night when I take out the aids I put them in the tupperware container. My last pair lasted 8 years doing this.
