    Post Phonak D Dry - UV-C light

I've been given a Phonak D Dry and in the small amount of time I've used it, the plastic around the UV light has started to change color.

I'm just wondering if the UV light can damage my hearing aids and earmolds?

Anyone else use a D Dry or the Unitron version?

I have a D-Dry which was new with my HAs in the middle of last year. I have had no problems with it. No problems with the HAs either - still on my first set of receivers on Phonak Audeo V90s. I use it 5 nights per week on either the 3 or 6 hour cycle depending on our weather. Where I live we have hot humid summers and warm winters.

Do you know how old the device is and what use it has had? Does it need a new bulb? The UV cycle is only the first 15 minutes on my device. The UV light only comes on after I shut the door. I have not noticed any discoloration but will check next time I am able to do so.

I'd be a bit cautious if the plastic around those UV bulbs is already changing color - it could be the lamp is overheating, or the plastic is not up to the task or both.

I've been a VERY happy user of Dry 'n Store's Global II unit (currently priced at $107) - which I've been using for about 10 years now? You can find these at the website: http://dryandstore.com/global-II.cfm along with other products they sell.

For travel, I'm real happy with the Widex Dry-Go UV Electric Drying Station, which I bought at Amazon.com. They run $114-160 (not sure what explains the price difference!). I used to travel with the Zephyr, but this Widex unit is about 1/3 the size. It plugs in, and the cord *does* run a bit short, tho.

I definitely feel that a UV + gentle heat dryer is the way to go. You get sanitization plus actual drying, both of which are good for a range of climates. They keep the aids clean and therefore our ears healthy.

What type of discoloration do you see? If the plastic just fades out, I wouldn't be concerned- most plastic does under UV light, unless there is a coat (paint or varnish) to protect it from fading. All HAs should have UV protection on their shell (they better do, with their pricing!). If discoloration indicates burning (yellow/brownish discoloration, and possibly a faint smell when you put your nose next to it), I would stop using it. The unit is very likely overheating and it may not be safe.
