Thread: Unhappy Camper

    Hello Everyone ,

I have had hearing loss for 3 years now accompanied with raging tinnitus in both ears due to a medication i took. I went around to many specialist but there was nothing they could do... My hearing loss after taking the med dropped from normal to around 35 and has since dropped (see audio chart below)

My audiologist at the time suggested Oticon epoq xw with the streamer and I really havent gotten substantial benefit from them.I know my expecations might be a little high since i used to hear well and then lost a big chunk all of a sudden...but still the quality for me is not up to par...

I have to really try hard to keep up with speech but annoying sounds like ticks and bells and what not i hear perfect ... speech has always been a toughy and thats really all i ever wanted since my work requires alot of communication with team members...

My hearing loss looks like this:

    250 L-65 R-65
    500 L-70 R-55
    1k L-60 R-60
    2k L-60 R-60
    3k L-65 R-75
    4k L-65 R-65
    6k L-65 R-65
    8k L-65 R-65

    SRT/SAT L-70 R-65
    Speech Recognition Both ears 68%

I have micro molds with small vents ( but i dont feel as if they really sit deep into my canal?) also the 1.5 cable that connects the HA to mold is a tad short while the next step up is super long and hangs out... i dont mind it but wish they could customize cable length to...

My question is , Are the Epoqs the best there is for my hearing loss?? and if they are, Are their any suggestions on tweaking them?? or Maybe getting a better mold??

I would really like to hear your input because i know i am missing out on soooooo much...

ANTONIO you need to have expectations in line of the 65% speech discrimination score.

You need to talk about realistic expectation with your audi, you could use LACE

Hi Antonio I agree with xbulder I think you should talk with your audiologist about expectations. Other things besides LACE that might help are things like an FM system or possibly other assistive listening devices. Good Luck!

Yeah i guess my expectations are a little too high, but its very frustrating with the loss i have. I will look around to see if any audiologists in the area have this program otherwise will just buy a copy and give it a go.

Thanks for all your honest advice , will post on how the results come out.

My exp. is that some brands works well for some customers and some others
work well for others. I would think you need to have expectations in line with
your speech disc. I would also suggest you get a Hint test and or a quicksinc.
this would determine how well you will perform in a noisy environment...

Donald schumm has a potcast in the Oticon website, where it talks about under what
conditions direc. mics works well. You might want to check that out.. it is good

First time I hear of a hint test and quicksinc. Will definitely bring that up to my audiologist. Also i will check out donald schumm page to gain more knowledge.

Thanks again for your time , You dont know how much your valuable input helps

btw Will be purchasing the lace program next week. Once i get going on that will post a review and results.
