Do Pocket Talkers help?
I am the ADA RN of a large mens prison in California. We do have inmates who are hearing impaired. A few have pocket talkers as well as hearing aids. The state does not have a policy on pocket talkers. They have left it up to each individual prison. Here is my problem. My CMO (chief medical officer) does not seem to think a pocket talker is benifical. We have a contract with an audiologist who services all our hear aids, hear tests and pocket talker needs, etc. He has expressed his view on the matter. He has pointed out there are times a pocket talker is better than an aid. The CMO doesn't fully trust that view because of the financual gain for the audiologist from the items he sales. Now here is what I need. I am trying to gather information for my CMO so he can make the decision in regards to pocket talkers. Can anyone tell me if a pocket talker has helped them or not? Is there hearing loss which does benifit from the use of a pocket talker? How long do the batteries be expected to last? (some inmates seem to use by batteries rapidly which imposes a security risk because they are being used in home made tattoo machines or sold for profit). Can a pocket talker be used by an able hearing person as a ease dropping device? I'm sure you can see where I am going with these questions. Any information you have is greatly welcomed.

for my CMO so he can make the decision in regards to pocket talkers
seems like he already has.. it's CA, why spend money you don't have? I assume that if they qualify for HAs they get them so who would need one of these?

I would think that the pocket talkers would only benefit someone who doesn't already have hearing aids.
Once they have hearing aids and they are set up to the inmates liking I wouldn't think a pocket talker would be needed.

In our office, we have recommended Pocket Talkers for:
1. Individuals with dexterity issues 2. Individuals with financial constraints and are mostly in one on one contact 3. Some individuals with cognitive issues. I can't imagine why, if someone has hearing aids, they would need a Pocket Talker also. And in our experience, if an inmate has a binaural loss, most often only a monaural fit is authorized.
